Like Pascual Chavez, whose Vicar he was for 12 years, Bregolin too fondly recalled his visits to the region and hailed the miracle of Don Bosco`s presence in South Asia, particularly in India. He expressed his admiration for the work we do on behalf of the poor and the marginalized. He expressed admiration particularly for the presence of many branches of the Salesian Family India. He exhorted the Salesians to work together with them to give greater expression to Don Bosco`s charism in India. In his homily Bregolin chose to focus on radicality. It seemed an irony to this reporter that on the penultimate day of the Chapter we get a very fine exposition of what radicality really means. Even though ``Radical witness to the Gospel`` was the theme of this Chapter, there was only a passing reference to the phrase in all the discussions. And no one had really explained what the phrase means, until Bregolin did it today. The term ``radical`` is to be understood in two senses, he explained. In a static sense, radical refers to roots, to someone finding his or her real origins, identity, the ``ground`` from which he or she finds meaning and direction. In a dynamic sense, radical indicates the point of departure, arising from the original and deep motivation - the ground - that drives a person to make appropriate choices in the here and now. Whoever is radical, first of all, lives and harmonises the static component (that is, one`s identity) with the dynamic (that is, what one does). Secondly, he or she knows the motivation for doing something, and it is a motivation that has been purified of contradictory, less pure, especially self-referential, inclinations. Thirdly, it is a motivation that is embraced with all one`s heart, mind and strength. One is convinced, drawn to and provoked by it. It is one that results in joy and fulfillment. Such a motivation finds expression in courageous and generous deeds that give convincing testimony to the roots from which they flow. And the most important root for us, from which everything flows, is Jesus Christ, the Lord of Life. Bregolin invited the South Asian Salesians to be deeply rooted and grounded in this Lord of Life, so that life in abundance may flow from this root and find expression in generous and courageous action on behalf of the poor, the marginalised, and the vulnerable. - Fr.
